View from Up North - commentary concerning the resort and world events
March 2006
Hello to all our friends.
Another year is upon us. Here it is, the 21st century, year 2006….can you believe it? Sometimes this reality gets blurred because we can’t be getting to be as old as each year tells us. But it must be true. So we have learned to appreciate what each year and season presents to us. This winter delivered thinner ice on the lake but plenty of snow. We expect that the mild temperatures will mean that ole man winter hangs around longer this spring. Hopefully not! We can’t wait to get in our boat and cast a line. Patience. That is what we tell the kids to have. Guess we better listen to that advice.
Despite a year where both of us had minor surgeries (Lea-thyroid & Dick-knee) we feel pretty healthy. As Grandma Toots used to tell us “Living in the North woods is a healthy lifestyle”…and it really is. We are much more active. Don’t have the same backaches that came with the desk job. We eat better, drink smarter and enjoy the small things in life more. On top of all that good news is the simple fact that we have less than 500 people living year round in this community. You get to know your neighbors quickly and we all help each other with the daily rigors of life.
Soon another season of visitors will be upon us. This is great news. We enjoy seeing all of you and watching your kids grow up, get married and have their families. We get calls and drop-in visitors from folks who stayed here as kids or spent a few nights with fond memories. Some even come back to stay again. This is the part of running the resort that makes it all worthwhile. Grandma Toots was definitely right!
